All of the latest Newcastle United transfer headlines including updates on the Magpies’ January transfer plans and Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips
Sandro Tonali was introduced from the bench in the Magpies’ comfortable home victory over Crystal Palace in what could be the midfielder’s final appearance for some time. The Italy international is set to face a lengthy ban as part of an investigation into illegal betting during his time with Serie A giants AC Milan.
Unsurprisingly, the likelihood of Tonali’s absence has prompted a wave of transfer speculation ahead of the mid-season window. According to Football Insider, signing a central midfielder in January is now a ‘top priority’ for Eddie Howe’s side.
The investigation into Tonali is said to have ‘superseded’ their previous transfer plans for the mid-season window.
Kalvin Phillips could be set for a move in the January transfer window – despite opting to stay and fight for his place at Manchester City in the summer. That is according to Fabrizio Romano, and the transfer expert admits the midfielder is an option for Newcastle United, but adds the Magpies will not firm up their shortlist until they know the outcome of their Champions League group-stage campaign.
He told CaughtOffside: “Let’s see which clubs end up being in the race, and let’s see if it’s a loan deal or a permanent deal – at the moment there is nothing concrete, but the direction seems very clear. City will never give their players away easily, so it will have to be the right proposal, but as things stand now it looks clearly like there is a possibility for City and Phillips to go their separate ways this January.
“Despite links with Newcastle, though, it’s important to clarify again that Newcastle will not make any decisions on transfers until they know the outcome of their Champions League group. Phillips looks like he’ll be an option on the market, but at the moment no decision has been made by Newcastle, it’s too early.”
